Why we write this blog
Tracing your family history can feel overwhelming at first. There are endless record collections, websites and opinions, and it is hard to know which step to take first. Family Tree Guide exists to make that first step, and every step after it, a little easier.
We publish short, practical articles in plain English. Each one focuses on a single task, such as interviewing a relative, reading a census page or storing old photographs, so you can learn something useful in a few minutes and put it into practice straight away.
What you will find here
- Beginner-friendly articles on starting and growing your tree
- Research techniques for finding records and solving tricky problems
- Advice on organising, preserving and sharing what you discover
- A glossary of common family history terms
- Live chat for quick questions about getting started
Our principles
We believe good family history is accurate, respectful and fun. That means checking facts against records, protecting the privacy of living people and remembering that every name on a tree belonged to a real person with a life of their own.
Independence
Family Tree Guide is an independent blog. We are not linked to, sponsored by or endorsed by any genealogy software company, DNA testing service or records provider. Any product or company names mentioned belong to their owners and appear only for general information.
